A young child in a white gi opens a door. He slowly removes his shoes and bows before entering onto a mat. He joins a group of other young children who are all talking and laughing. All of a sudden the children stop laughing and stand in a straight line. None of the children make a sound as a tall man walks into the room. He slowly bows to a picture on the wall and turns around. Scotty looks the children up and down for a moment. He glares at one of them and quickly throws a punch at the Childs face but the young boy quickly blocks the punch. Scotty nods his head softly. He makes his way down the line. He stops before a second student who looks very nervous.
Scotty: James……You have your belt tied wrong again.
The young child does not say anything and slowly lowers his head. Scotty lifts the head of the child and smiles softly at him. He whispers to the child
Scotty: Don’t worry it took me a while also.
Scotty gets down on a knee and unties the Childs white belt. He wraps it around his waist and quickly ties it again.
Scotty: Allen why do we train our self’s?
The young boy snaps to attention.
Allen: To build our body’s…..to build our minds and to build our spirits. We must always be prepared to do what must be done.
Scotty smiles softly
Scotty: Very good.
Scotty walks in front of the group. He quickly turns around and faces them
Scotty: We must always remember that violence is never the answer. Peace and harmony is the path, but we also must remember that there are dangers in this world. Dangers that we must all be prepared for. Weakness is no excuse. Youth is no excuse. Lack of knowledge is no excuse. You will all be tested one day. I am here to give you the tools to pass the tests in life. Reiter it is in this dojo or in the outside world. You must all remember that between these walls you will all grow. You will all become the men and women of the world. You must remember at all times that respect for yourself and respect for others are the keys to a happy life. Now all of you pair up. I want you all to practice front and side kicks today.
Scotty bows to the students and slowly steps aside as the young children pair up.
Woman: Mr. McFarland…..MR. MCFARLAND!
A young woman is rushing towards Scotty. She is out of breath and looks to be very angry.
Scotty: Yes …..how can I help you?
Woman: Why did you try to hit my child in the face?
Scotty rolls his eyes for a moment. He looks at the woman for a moment and gets a small grin on his face.
Scotty: You must be the boy’s mother. I don’t think I have seen you in my dojo before.
Woman: Yes I am his mother. I am very upset that you would try to hurt my child.
Scotty chuckles for a moment.
Scotty: …….Look at your son out there. Does he look hurt? Does he look scared to you?
The woman looks on at her son for a moment. She shakes her head.
Scotty: I have been doing this for a very long time man. First off please do not call me Mr. McFarland in my gym. The proper term is shîfu. Secondly……I would have never hurt your child. He is very advanced and he knows how to read a punch. I have taught your son for many years. He knows what he is doing. Now please . Let me do my job and watch the children.
The woman gets a dirty look on her face but walks away. Scotty shakes his head for a moment and turns to watch the children.
