On Friday, RCW Personality and Live Event Bulletin Host Melvin Gates dropped by RazorbackCW.com for a brief chat with the hardcore RCW fans. Below is a recap of the highlights:
*Melvin would not give the actual total of the total gross revenue brought in by Hog Heaven: On The Border, but said it exceeded the office's expectations. When asked if that meant more and more shows will be held outside of Arkansas, Melvin answered "Stay tuned."
*Merchandise is selling well, not only at the live shows, but also online ordering. He likened the interest from the states and overseas to a hot unsigned band, and noted the amount of tape traders and online fans from at least three continents as a sign that RCW is doing something right. He speculated that Doug Gavelon merchandise is currently the best selling for an individual wrestler, but that the website expected to try to clearance out the remaining unsold Floyd Boyd bandanas.
*When asked for details about the next arena show, Melvin replied "Before you go to Heaven, you have to go to School." When pressed further, Melvin only said there were big plans ahead, and it would be a "best of both worlds" for the fans.
*Melvin also commented that he believes a few RCW staff members will be given their time to shine in the near future.
*A fan asked about the whereabouts of Trent Raven. Melvin said that some expected him to show up in Texarkana, but he was not in the stadium. He guessed he will be back with the promotion at some point, but would not speculate as to when.
*Melvin did share a funny story about a visitor at Hog Heaven: On The Border. "Rough & Tumble" Rip Evers, a former RCW employee who lives in Pecos, Texas, came by the show looking to visit friends backstage. However, Rip only has one friend on the roster, Cletus Beauchamp, and he never left Yocum Creek, Kentucky, due to the beginning of squirrel hunting season.
*"Fast" Franky Higgs is still lobbying to have his girlfriend, Miss Penny, as an on-air talent. RCW President AJ Supreme still has zero interest in this happening, as he feels one member of the Higgs household on the payroll is more than enough.
*In further Higgs news, a fan asked if Melvin knows the identity of the person who got him out of jail, as Jeffrey Hollywood revealed in his 15 Minutes of Fame at Southern Dynamite. Gates said he knows nothing, and that even the usually gabby Higgs is tight-lipped about it. RCW backstage interviewer Bettie Lee Rose, however, is determined to get to the bottom of this, and Gates expects her quest to start sooner rather than later.
*AJ Supreme has used his promoting contacts to arrange a unique piece of merchandise that will be sold at RCW shows in the near future to benefit a good cause. Gates would not say anything further, but expects the final documentation to be in house this week, possibly in time for this item to be sold at the Fayetteville Boys & Girls Club for Southern Dynamite.
*Speaking of the Boys & Girls Club, Gates said RCW's contract with the venue, which calls for it to be the exclusive home for Southern Dynamite broadcasts, is coming up for renewal. RCW must notify the club this week if they intend not to let the contract roll over. AJ Supreme has been mum on the subject to Melvin.
A few quick hits:
*Melvin was very complimentary of "The Franchise" Ares, saying he has a renewed focus since once again coming out of retirement.
*A "little birdy" told Melvin that a venerable member of the RCW roster better "watch his back" in the coming weeks.
*The reaction he has gotten from fans thusfar for the Ladder Match coming up for the Southern Heritage Championship has been largely positive. He won't speculate who the majority of fans would root for, as it seemed pretty even to him last week.
*A wrestling legend is said to be interested in doing at least a one-shot in RCW some time in the future.
*A professional fighter is tiring of the antics of "Night Train" Clifton Perason, and has issued a challenge, which Pearson and Franky Higgs have completely ignored.
*Word around the campfire is RCW young gun and Arkansas local Davey Boone has helped the promotion locate potential venues for upcoming shows.
*For more insight on all things RCW, Melvin reminded folks to call the OFFICIAL RCW Hotline early and often, and then signed off, bidding folks farewell until this Wednesday's Southern Dynamite.
